HP Unifies 150M+ Identities for a Seamless Global Experience

Objective
HP aimed to create HP ID, a unified identity management ecosystem to provide customers with a 360-degree view of their experience. The goal was to optimize spend, retire legacy systems, and provide a secure, globally available identity store capable of scaling to over a billion IoT device identities.
Challenge
HP faced a fragmented user base supported by more than 12 legacy authentication systems. This complexity led to high costs and made it difficult to comply with diverse regional data regulations. Additionally, migrating over 100 high-traffic applications like HP Shopping required a high-stakes deployment with a 99.95% uptime goal and zero allowed downtime.
Solution
HP partnered with Ping Professional Services to implement PingDirectory and PingAuthorize with automated, multi-region deployment on AWS. Using OAuth 2.0 and SCIM, they created a common interface for registration and login, enabling single sign-on (SSO) and social login options across the entire HP digital universe.
Results
HP successfully migrated over 100 business applications to the new cloud environment with no downtime. HP ID now provides SSO for over 150 million identities, adding thousands more daily. The unified platform has reduced management complexity, optimized spending, and improved customer satisfaction by delivering a radically simplified, recognizable login experience globally.
