Ping Identity is interested in the best deployment solution for you, our customers.

We partner with some of the largest enterprises in the world as they undergo their digital transformations, so we know what’s needed to be successful when it comes to where and how to deploy your Ping services. If you haven’t even considered consuming PingFederate or Access Management as a service in the cloud, that’s ok too. No matter your situation, Ping will help you choose a deployment strategy that solves current pain points while leaving the door open for future growth.

With Ping’s platform, you have your choice of deployment options, not just self-managed software. In fact, Ping can help no matter where you are on your digital transformation journey–regardless of your current IT environment.

We've compiled four tips for developing a successful migration strategy to help streamline and simplify your migration of Ping software to Ping’s cloud (PingOne).

Tip 1: Understand Common Deployment Pain Points

To pick a suitable cloud deployment model, you must first identify your pain points. Many of our customers find it difficult to zoom out and see where the issues lie. Yet, until you know what you’re up against, it won’t be easy to map your cloud migration.

Let’s start by looking at some of the most common pain points:

  • Your company has different legacy identity and data storage deployments. This has led to redundant tools, a lack of consistent best practices, and disjointed end-user experiences.

  • Your identity teams face a greater volume of access control requests and use cases than ever before. This is too much to manage on top of on-premises infrastructure, security, and upgrades.

  • The current deployment isn’t scalable. Legacy, homegrown, and on-premise data centers give you control but cannot scale to meet new business, security, and user experience requirements.

  • Your on-premise deployment limits your ability to take advantage of Ping’s out-of-the-box integrations and seamless automation. Your “custom cement” means changes require additional heavy workloads that consume IT resources.

If any of these problems strike a chord, then it may be time to reassess if now is the time to move all your Ping IAM services to PingOne’s more agile and cloud-focused set-up.

But what if you’re not quite ready to invest in migration yet? Ping often encounters clients who see some advantages in migrating but are apprehensive about diving into cloud deployment with us. That’s okay, too. Sometimes, no matter the pain points, it’s about control, which brings us to step 2.

Tip 2: Decide the Level of Control You Need

Another important consideration when choosing a deployment option is the level of control you need. For example, some organizations may want total control of their network, while others are comfortable leveraging exclusively multi-tenant SaaS services. There are 3 IAM deployment models, all of which are about control, that will help dictate your migration path.

We Manage

With this option, Ping shoulders all the responsibility of overseeing your IAM deployment. With our PingOne solutions, you get scale and performance while relieving your team of the burden of updates and maintenance. We’ll help accelerate your migration to our cloud without the need to “rip and replace” your ecosystem. We're with you on the frontlines, from just-in-time migration to data store transfers.

You might be thinking, I’m in a regulated industry, and this isn’t an option for me. Think again! Ping has many clients in highly regulated industries, in fact, we work with some of the most stringent deployment requirements, including FedRAMP High, DOD IL5 Authorized SaaS.

Partner-Managed

When you use partner-managed IAM, a third party oversees your deployment to keep your data, applications, and servers secure. Ping Identity is partnered with several great managed service companies, such as Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

If you opt to partner with a cloud platform like AWS, Ping will work with all parties involved to get your IAM deployed quickly and efficiently. Since all our partners are experienced with Ping products, you can trust that you will be in good hands.

You Manage

As you already know, with self-managed IAM, you oversee your entire identity management system. No matter if you opt for an on-premise, cloud, or hybrid network, you are responsible for deploying, maintaining, and upgrading software. If you stick with this option, Ping will continue to offer you the exact process you’re accustomed to for updating and maintaining PingFederate or Access Management.

Whether you choose Ping-managed, partner-managed, or continue to self-manage, we’ve got you covered with the latest IAM services and capabilities. While deciding the level of control you need is paramount in considering your cloud strategy, thinking through your longer-term digital transformation goals is equally important.

Tip 3: Define Your Digital Transformation Goals

Digital transformation is a journey, and cloud migration is only one aspect of the overall approach. How can you ensure enough flexibility for the next 5 years? 10 years? What’s sustainable and what’s not?

For most, it’s not about whether you migrate; it’s about when, how, and with what resources. The best options allow you to take your time and help you future-proof. We often hear from our customers that their needs are constantly changing. That’s why it’s essential to consider how to future-proof your IAM deployment strategy and investments.

No matter where you are in your digital transformation journey, Ping will map a deployment configuration that works for you. In fact, we are more than happy to help hammer out the details of your cloud transformation strategy.

Whether you are running on a legacy server or working with the latest cloud service providers, Ping can help you:

  • Modernize your identity infrastructure to unify your users and authentication policies with a centralized directory. This authentication authority will eliminate errors and inefficiencies.

  • Free up more time for your team to tackle value-added projects by migrating your Ping software from on-premise to a managed cloud infrastructure.

  • Deploy best-in-class identity on a schedule that minimizes risk for your operation. Combine self-managed, multi-tenant, and dedicated tenant solutions in any way that works for you.

  • Support and implement around open identity standards to take advantage of all of Ping’s pre-built integration kits, helpful tools, and flow templates.

  • Take advantage of Ping’s new capabilities and the interoperability of our wide array of products and services, like IGA, passwordless, and threat protection.
