University of Hull Replaces Legacy Systems to Deliver Superior Experience

 

THE OBJECTIVE

The University of Hull is a globally renowned teaching and research institution, with over 18,000 students. Established in 1927, it is based across two campuses in Hull and Scarborough, England, with a remote site in China. It also operates the Hull York Medical School in collaboration with the University of York.


Faced with increasing competition, the university wanted to deliver an unrivalled student learning and teaching experience globally. To help meet its objective, it embarked on a program to replace all of its legacy ICT services. The aim was to introduce new solutions capable of addressing the demands for ease of use and streamlined access, while ensuring the security of sensitive data, maintaining operational standards and not breaking the bank.

 

THE CHALLENGE

The university was challenged to maintain the security of its sensitive and important resources, while simultaneously satisfying access demands and BYOD initiatives. To address these needs efficiently and without hurting user experience, it needed to replace its legacy authentication systems with a single solution that provided federated authentication, single sign-on (SSO) and multi-factor authentication (MFA). The solution needed to provide secure access to both internal and external hosted services for a range of users and devices, as well as support a planned move to Office 365.

 

THE SOLUTION

IDM specialist ProofID partnered with Ping to deliver a fully managed service, centered on PingFederate and PingID.


By choosing PingFederate, ProofID could replace the university’s Shibboleth service, which was being used to access a substantial number of library resources. They were also able to extend the SSO capabilities of PingFederate to accommodate a range of applications, including the university’s collaborative storage solution from Box, and Canvas, its new Virtual Learning Environment. ProofID will also use PingFederate to enable directory integration and SSO for Office 365.


To address concerns regarding data protection, ProofID looked to use PingID for multi-factor authentication. By providing enhanced security, ease of use and an extensive range of authentication methods, PingID was deployed across of range of applications and services, including the university’s VPN.

 

THE RESULTS

The University of Hull is able to offer a streamlined user experience, which makes for higher student satisfaction. Relationships with partners are also better than ever thanks to simplified, secure access to resources. Moving to a single set of technologies supported by a managed service has reduced costs, increased efficiency and alleviated security and compliance concerns, allowing the university to focus on doing what it does best.
