Ping Identity Benchmarks State of Identity and Access Management Adoption
Denver — November 29, 2016
Ping Identity®, the leader in Identity Defined Security, today announced the availability of “The State of Identity & Access Management for the Digital Enterprise, 2016” report. The report highlights that companies agree identity is the linchpin for digital transformation success and are starting to standardize on IAM technologies, including Multi-factor Authentication (MFA), Single Sign-On (SSO) and access security. However, adoption is not equal among all use cases for employees, partners and customers, and enterprises are behind when it comes to securing their partner networks and standards adoption. The comprehensive report is available as well as an infographic.
Identity is at the core of the digital transformation happening across every major industry today. From blue chip incumbents like GE to cloud-first innovators like Netflix, many businesses are using identity to morph into digital-first businesses. Identity and Access Management, the security discipline that enables the right individuals to access the right resources at the right times for the right reasons1, is a critical enabler for companies making the shift to digital by effectively balancing the most rigorous security measures with seamless access to data and systems. Identity is embedded in the DNA of any connected infrastructure.
Key findings from the report revealed nearly all IT decision makers agree IAM is important to their company’s digital transformation success. Additionally, identity management has recently escalated to an executive-level priority and is seen as a strategic function of growth initiatives. 84 percent of respondents’ senior leadership teams think IAM is critical to the adoption of cloud, and 89 percent agree it is critical to mobility initiatives. Meanwhile, 81 percent of enterprises indicate that IAM is an important enabler of IoT initiatives.
“Identity is essential to a seamless and secure user experience, and this study revealed just how much it is instrumental to our everyday life,” said Andre Durand, CEO of Ping Identity. “IT leaders can clearly articulate how critical SSO, MFA and secure access management are to succeeding in the digital economy, yet lagging adoption of key identity standards and IAM technology for partner networks poses a major threat to keeping enterprise data secure.”
Enterprises Standardize on SSO, MFA and Secure Access Management
The report includes a detailed breakdown of how SSO, MFA and secure web, mobile and API access management are deployed across different use cases, including employees, customers and partners. SSO is the most widely deployed customer-facing IAM application today, with 92 percent of enterprises using it to simplify the login process for business stakeholders. MFA is growing in popularity, with 80 percent of enterprises using it to provide stronger security by authenticating users through multiple credentials beyond a username and password alone. 90 percent of enterprises use secure web, mobile and API management to provide a secure, consistent user experience across devices.
Looking into Standards, IAM for Cloud Infrastructure and IoT
The research goes into great detail about IAM trends, from standards, to cloud infrastructure, to IoT. Some high-level findings in these areas include:
Ping Identity conducted a survey of IT decision makers in the U.S., U.K., France and Germany who are responsible for overseeing technology deployments. Survey respondents come from enterprises with at least 500 employees in the U.S., and at least 200 employees in the U.K., France and Germany. The survey of 200 IT decision makers was conducted online by Regina Corso Consulting between Aug. 26 and Sept. 8, 2016.
