Virtually every identity management "stack" includes an identity federation component, either bundled with the system or available as an option. And yet, Ping customers still buy our solutions, even though they already have federation options as part of their "incumbent" IdM stack. Why is this?
What about the so-called "Cloud SSO" startups?
Many Cloud SSO vendors are small startups with questionable financials and stability. Some started in a completely different market space and only recently moved into SSO, either because their original business model failed or as an afterthought to their existing products. Their SSO solutions are generally proprietary and use insecure, non-standard technologies like screen scraping and password vaulting. Many are proxy services, requiring all application traffic to pass through their servers and creating potential security, performance and failure points. They may also require DNS changes, resulting in unavoidable application downtime when switching to their service. Some support SAML connections only for a few SaaS providers, and result to proprietary methods for the rest.
