Cloud Single Sign-On & Federated Identity
Background
The key to implementing Cloud Single Sign-On (SSO) is a technology and a set of industry standards called “federated identity”. Federated identity allows identities to be shared securely across disparate networks and applications. It is the glue that enables SSO to occur at scale.
How it Works
While PingFederate® and PingConnect™ primarily use federated identity standards to implement Internet SSO, they also utilize proprietary mechanisms for some specific use cases such as mobile device support. PingFederate and PingConnect both support the predominant federated identity standards, Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) and WS-Federation. Furthermore, they support the three versions of SAML currently in use: SAML 1.0, SAML 1.1 and SAML 2.0.

Benefits
Administrative Console: While the SAML 2.0 protocol specification has hundreds of pages and dozens of interdependent configuration variables, Ping products provide administrative consoles, which mask the underlying protocol complexity while ensuring proper server configuration. Using the console, an administrator can configure a single PingFederate server to play the SAML Identity Provider (IdP) role, Service Provider (SP) role or both.
Fast and Affordable: Unlike most alternatives that require expensive and time-consuming system integration work and custom development to get a SAML connection into production, PingFederate is a comprehensive, standalone software platform, accommodating virtually any SAML use case with a speedy, low-cost deployment.
User Account Management: To meet the SAML needs of advanced enterprises, PingFederate offers Cloud User Account Management and a Security Token Service. It also provides enterprise-class management functionality including support for geographically distributed clusters.
